The analysis of data from 30 quadrats shows that bamboo shoots of Phyllostachys makinoi start to break through the soil in the early or middle April,lasting about twenty to thirty days. The abortive rate of bamboo shoots is between 23 percent and 30 percent,which suggests higher survival rate of young bamboo stand. The highest production of bamboo shoots occurs on the present sites with stocking density of 3450 stems per hm ̄2 to 3900 stems per hm ̄2,and the initial bamboo shoots have the largest diameter at foot. A regression eguation was derived for the relationship between weight,diameter and height of bamboo shoots:W=-0. 428 49 +0. 021 99H+0. 028 12D,with a correlation coefficient of 0. 817 30. The duration is about 35 days from the emergence of bamboo shoots to the ending of young bamboo growth,and the increment is greater during night than in daytime.
