On May 26, 1994, Clinton announced decision to renew unconditionally Most Favored Nation trading status toward China during the successive period of 1994-95 and to delink henceforth human rights from the annual extension of MFNtrading status for China. This decision is yet subject to the confirmation of the Congress. Although there will most likely be a heated debate between the pros and the cons, in the last analysis the winner will be Clinton. Does that mean from now on Sino-U. S. relationship will be plain sailing? A brief answer is this:It will certainly progress favorably but not smoothly. There still exists a series of contradictions and conflicts between China and United States
