The Phase 1 of the Hermes development programme covers a period of three years until the end of 1990. Objectives of the Phase 1 are to complete Hermes spaceplane configuration and system design, the development of critical materials and subsystems, the definition and validation of aerodynamic tools, and the definition of interfaces of Hermes with Ariane-5 and Columbus.
