Abstract The author simply discussed the language and speech development of normal children in the article at first. Then,some basic questions of cleft lip and palate speech pathology were discussed, such as the reason, character,diagnostic methods and diagnostic principles of cleft lip and palate speech disorder. Some of very important questions of diagnosis and treatment of cleft lip and palate speech disorder were especially emphasized. For example, does complete velopharyngeal closure mean normal speech? What is the importance of the surgery age and method to patient's speech recovery? Finally, the author gave some of the best treatment principles to the different kinds of cleft palate speech disorders in the article.
