The graft polymerization of maleic anhydride(MA) onto preirradiated HDPE powder was studied. Irradiations were carried out in vacuum or in air at room temperature to total doses rangingfrom 1 Mrad to 8 Mrad. Infrared spectrascopy(IR)showed the existence of HDPE-graft-MA, electron spin resonance(ESR )was used to diagnose the type of radicals produced after irradiation invacuum or air environments.Effeets of radical type and preirradiation dose on the percent graftwere discussed. According to the DSC analysis, the graft reaction oceurred mainly in the amorphousregion.
