The purpose of this paper is to discuss and summarize the thoughts on developments ofstructural mechanics oriented to students ,researchers ,engineers and the teachers in the study andthe application of structural mechanics. The paper is focused on the following aspects:l.Introduction of structurai mechanics as the first branch of applied mechanics;2.the strategy inthe developments of structural mechanics.A strategy of′MOdification first and recovery then′ispresented and discussed;3.Developments of strlJctural mechanics towards to high hierarchies;4.some further thoughts. The author would like to contribute this paper to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Journalof Computational StructuraI Mechanics and Applicdtions.
