This PaPer Provides an overview of advances in research on Chinese Pigs( Meishan,Fengjing and Mlnzhou) in the U. S. during 1990 1993.It includes chiely 4 parts:① production traits,② physiology field,③ gene mapping,④ development of new breeds or lines.Results of both published and unpublished research indicate the Chinese breeds,especially Meishan and Fengjing, can be used to produce crossbred gilts that reach puberty earlier,have a higher concePtion rate and Produce larger litters than crossbred American gilts.Under certain feeding system,the Chinese breeds and crosses may not be superior to American pure breeds and crosses in litter size at second and later parities.Additional data is needed on this subject. Chinese purebreds and crossbreds even using repartitioning agents are clearly inferior to American pigs in growth rate and carcass merit.Perhaps 1/4 Chinese pigs treated with repartitioning agents will be acceptable.Also Chinese breeds could contribute to the development of new breeds by crossing with lean pig breeds followed by selection for lean growth and litter size.Because of the great differences between Chinese and American breeds in many traits,the Chinese breeds have contributed and will continue to contribute slgnificantly to basic physiology and gene mapping studies.
