The effects of cell structure,cathode material,catholyte composition and,oth-er parameters on electro-reduction of phenanthrene were examined in various electrolvticsysterns.It was shown that the reduction conversion of phenanthrene can be as high as 90%in CH_3CNl +Bu_4NBr +EtOH+H_2O system in a divided three-electrode cell with Pt and Pbas anode and cathOde,respectively.The optimum conditions were found to be as follow:Bu_4NBr=0.37mol/L,H_2O=2.0mol/L,I=6mA/cm ̄2,t=25℃,The main product was di-hydrophenanthrene, These conclusions provide a practical basis for the further research onthe electro-reduction of coal tar and coal pitch.
