Results from the monitoring of the pollution of organic matter, sulphide, Hg, Cu and Pb in sediment of Guangzhou reach of the Pearl River shows that, the contents of the pollutants are 20. 8-74. 4 g/kg for organic matter, 28. 7- 538 mg/kg for sulphide 10. 07-0. 74 mg/kg for Hg, 20. 9- 101mg/kg for Cu, 14. 2-917mg/kgfor Pb; the sectional distributions of them appear increase progressively from.upperreach to middle reach, and decrease progressively from middle reach to lower reach; the most serious pollution is basically at the three sections at Liede, Guangzhi and Huangsha; the pollution degree order of the pollutants is sulphide>Hg>Cu>Pb. Correlation analysis also shows that the relationships of Hg and Cu with organic matter and sulphide are extremely significant, indicating that the accumulative amounts of Hg and Cu increase with the increase in the accumulation of organic matter and sulphide in the sediment, and meaning that the pollutions become more serious.
