被动式大阳能房屋的设计原理是将建筑物墙体通过构造处理吸收太阳能，利用热流的自然循环来传导、吸收或阻止散逸太阳热能，使室内达到冬暖夏凉的效果。以在山东建造的几幢太阳能住宅为例，造价虽然增加了１０％，但冬季室内温度基本满足要求，在节能方面具有较先进水平，年采暖期节能率达６０％。
