Abstract This paper gives the definition of desertification that has been owned univer-sally in the world : 'Desertification means the process of soil deterioration in the aridzone ,semi arid zone and the dry semiwet zone under the influenee of various factorsincluding climate and human activities . ''Based on this definition the desertified land inChina is divided into two types: one is the sand desert resulting from sandy surfacesuffering from friequent drought , wind ,and intensified land use. The other is desertifiedland due to erosion by runnins water plus repeated accumulation of earthlike matter (orweathered product)and intensified land use by human beings. The area of desertifiedland in China is 3. 327 million ha, being 34% of the total territory- Of the desertifiedland , 1.533 million ha is desertified sandy land ,andl. 794 million ha is desertified landresulting from water erosion. Almost four hundred million of people are threatened bythe desertification. Based on domestic and foreign experienee in desertification control,the author describes the integrated control system for the desertified unirrigated farmland, irrisated farm land, srassland and forest land . He points out that the globalstrusgle asainst desertification is a struggle for human survival. Recorrimendations aremade to strensthen the cooperation and exchange between China and other countries inthe desertification control. The Ministry of Forestry should strengthen the orsanizationand management of the institutes set up for desertification control. The forest construc-tion in arid zone, semi arid zone and dry semiwet zone should be closely combinedwith desertification control .
