Preliminary studies have been undertaken to test the indicator ability of the oyster Ostrea rivularis for monitoring copper, zinc, cadimium and lead in seawaters along Guangdong province. Applications of POLYDIV statistical analysis to heavy metal concentrations in oysters from 14 sites along Guangdong coastal waters confirmed that profiles of copper, zinc and cadmium abundance in the oyster agreed substantially with the distribution of industrial discharge along Guangdong province, amd also with patterns of contamination found in organisms and sediments collected from the tidal zone along Guangdong provice. As a result, this oyster appears to be a reliable bio-indicator for monitoring copper, cadimium and zinc, although its use to monitor lead requires further study.
