Form and Contingency——An Analysis of Iris Murdoch's Viewpoints on Novel-writing

艾丽丝·默多克是英国二战后文坛上有名的哲理小说家 ,她以小说叙事的形式来阐释自己的哲学观点和伦理思想。从默多克小说创作的理论渊源入手 ,结合她小说的叙事特点阐明其小说观为 :理想的小说要保持叙事的“形式”和内容的“偶然”之间的张力 。

Iris Murdoch is a well-known philosophical novelist in British academic field after the Second World War.She attempts to employ the narrative form to explain her philosophical views and ethical thoughts.This paper,starting with the explanation of the theoretical originality of her novel-writing,analyses the narrative features of her novels to illustrate her views of novel-writing,i.e.,the ideal novel keep the tension between the narrative“form” and the “contingency” of the content,representing the characters' contingenciness and particularity.
