Sherwood Anderson was the secedor par excellence. He dismissed the traditional structure of the upper class that attached importance to the plot, and departed from it Through digging into the inner world of characters deeply,he opened up a new area of naturalism. In this article, the mood and the inner world of American people in the early twenties have been displayed through the analysis of this short story Unlighted Lamps: loneliness, helpless- ness, hesitation, wandering and drifting. Americans are the same wherever they officially reside, and they are all foot -loose,homeless seekers, but few find what they are looking for. They have been misunderstood, and they seek to understand, and they always live in bewilderment and trouble.
