This paper,after talking about the development and vicissitudes of women literature,focuses on the introduction of two great women writers--Jane Austen and George Eliot and the women characters in their major works.For a very long period of time,men dominate the status of women in both history and society.During the nineteenth century,women writers such as Austen and Eliot,with a completely new viewpoint,began to probe into women issues.Women in their novels are no longer simply dutiful,even though they still cannot get rid of the influence of the men's society.In order to strive for equality,they begin to rethink themselves profoundly,and raise a cry for the rights of women.
