The French Lieutenant’s Woman is the best-known novel written by John Fowles and is also called the po-mo metafiction. In the novel the mysterious woman Sarah is introduced, whose image is the result of the literary tradition and whose appearance and behaviour have undermined the relationship between man and woman, master and servant. And her image also echoes the feminist movement in the 1960s. The analysis would help understand the protagonist and also the novel better.
