"Blanking off" Macao and Sino-Portuguese Relations in the Late Qing Dynasty

“封锁”澳门是同治、光绪年间中葡关系的重要事件。这一事件不仅使粤澳之间冲突频仍 ,而且直接导致了同、光年间中葡关于澳门周围水域主权归属的争执 ,其严重性并不亚于“封锁”香港 ,却始终被清政府看作是粤澳之间的地方性事件 ,由此引发的各种冲突和纠纷基本上由广东当局直接处理。透过这一事件 ,可以看出鸦片战争后清政府的对葡政策及中葡关系的发展脉络。

Blanking off' Macao is an important event in the Sino-Portuguese relationship during the period of the reign of Tongzhi and Guangxu Emperors. This event not only brought the continual conflicts between Guangdong and Macao but also led to the controversy on the sovereignty of Macao water area. Its ponderance is no less than that of the event of 'banking off' Hong Kong at the same time. However, it was only regarded as a local affair by the Qing government. This paper analyzes the deep-seated reason of this action, and discusses the policies of Qing government on Portugal and development of Sino-Portuguese relationship.
