John Donne, the forefather of Metaphysical poetry, is recognized as unique in the literature of Renaissance England mainly for his imaginative but “startling” images, and strong sense of reality in poetry. His delicate conceits, colloquial language and profound understanding of man's inner world have greatly influenced later writers. His thoughts and ideas, to a certain extent, happen to coincide with those of T. S. Eliot. Thus, by analyzing the emptiness, the implication and casualness of the images, and the complication of the narration, this thesis endeavors to prove the modernity contained in Donne 's poetry.
