How did the British aestheticists face this crisis? Their temporal metaphors may drop us a hint. On the one hand, the representative works of British aestheticism compare time to such things as sacrifice, stream, swallow and flame. On the other hand, they suggest that love, passion and the representation of visual arts can escape the movement of time and become immortal. By analyzing the temporal metaphors, this paper proves that neither love and passion nor the representation of visual arts is able to break away from the confines of time to become immortal and that the aestheticists haven't found 'God's heaven' in their 'secure house of beauty'.
