The phenological descriptions in Du Fu’s poems are closely related to the poet’s emotion. (a) 'The dew hath become white since tonight' in Recalling My Brother on a Moon-shiny Night, hasn’t been accurately explained in the previous notes, which only focused on White Dew (a Chinese seasonal division points on 8 or 7 September), failing to get to its essence of conveying emotion. This expression conveys the poet’s homesickness through the depiction of phenological change. (b) The sixth poem in Seven Rhymes in Tonggu, describes the snakes’coming out of their holes. A misunderstanding occurs here. Most notes hold that this is a figure of speech. However, this is actually an indication of spring, a sign of life resurrection——a signal to Du Fu , who always fell in cold and poverty, that warm spring is coming and life can improve.
