A Different Challenge: On Translation of Pop Literature

社会上普遍认为通俗文学内容简单、缺乏艺术性,因此没有翻译挑战性。本文结合作者对网络惊险小说《蓝色虚拟空间》的翻译实践,分析当代优秀通俗文学对译者的挑战,以期引起人们对通俗文学价值和翻译的重新认识,承认并重视通俗文学的翻译。

Pop literature has often been dismissed cavalierly as being too superficial, too lowbrow, to be worth a translator's efforts. Yet an analysis of the author's own experience in translating The Blue Nowhere, an Internet thrill, calls in question that facile assumption. Outstanding works of contemporary pop fiction are no less difficult to translate than 'high' literature. In its own ways, pop literature could be just as challenging to its would-be translators as any other genre. Rather than disdaining to take it on, translators would do well to treat pop fiction seriously.
