A new series of guanidinium cation-based room temperature ionic liquids(RTILS) was prepared by treating tetraalkylguanidine with an alkylating agent in the presence of an alkaline reagent and a phase transfer catalyst(PTC). Good results were obtained when GPF_6 was used as the reaction medium for the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol with sodium hypochlorite as the oxidant.
