《青草在歌唱》以深深的笔调描写了社会群体中权力网的作用,以及在这个网中个体的挣扎与生存。小说中的人物,或因追逐权力而疯狂,或用消极对抗以虚无自我从而粉碎权力可操纵的对象,但结局都是悲剧性的;因为社会群体中的权力网是人的异己力量,这注定了作为个体的人必然是其牺牲品。小说借用荒原的意象告诫人类,克制对权力的贪欲,领悟“丧钟为每个人而鸣”的生命存在,珍惜生命,走向怜惜、同情与关爱,乃是人类的希望之所在。

The effect of the power net in the social group as well as the struggle and the survival of individuals in the net are depicted in a profound tone in The Grass Is Singing. The major characters in the novel, either crazy about power-seeking or lost in self-effacement to resist the power passively, all ended in tragedy. This is due to the objectification of the human beings in the power net of the society, who are destined to be the victims as individuals. Using the image of the waste land, the novel tells human beings to control their desire for power, understand the significance of life in that death is the respecter of everyone and show sympathy and love for each other—where lies the hope for the future.
