(Mytilus edulis)
Mercury is a well-known poisonous element to life. It is also known to have obvious inhibiting or harmful effect on some macro-algae(see Ka-in and Boney). The present paper summarizes some results of experiments of this poison on the female gametophytes of Laminaria japonica and Un-daria pinnatifida.Gametophyte clones cultured in the laboratory and freshly collected gametophytes were the objects of the study in the present experiments. Different concentrations of mercury chloride HgCl2 were used.It was observed that the concentration of 0.1 ppm HgCl2 did no obvious harm to the gametophytes. Higher coacentration of 0.5ppm was seen to render quick death to the gametophytes which all died in six days.It is interesting to note that the lower concentrations of Hgcl2 such as 0.01-0.05ppm showed some stimulating effect on the maturation of the Undaria gametophytes. But no such effect was observed in Laminaria, The difference in response to mercury might be due to the difference in heredity in these two brown algal species. The more HgCl2 tolerant property of Laminaria raised some serious problem in the polluted area of the sea where the seaweed cultivation was carried out.
