The basic equations for the forces acting on a flexible inextensible wire towed steadily through water are given.Data on hydrodynamic coefficients for stranded wires are presented. New forms for the variation with angle to the flew of the normal tangential and side force coefficients are proposed for 6 stranded trawl wire.Experiments to determine hydrodynamic coefficients in which a warp is towed alone or with only a weight at its lower end may not give values appropriate for use in trawling applications.Simple formulae for weight in air and water of 6 stranded wire are given.Data for wires of different numbers of strands are presented and discussed. There is a need for more careful experiments to verify or improve these coefficient forms and, in particular, to determine the effect of -vibration, Reynolds Number variation, numbers of strands and coefficient of twist.
