This paper researches, from the angle of the readings Mao Zedong did in his youth, into the intrinsic driving force of his success in revolutionary career. Mao had a very strong liking for reading, and reading paves the way for his great success. The article probes into the reasons why Mao specialized in social sciences as well as the relationship between this specialization and his success. The focus of the paper is put on the two learning realms of Mao in his youth. One is the purpose of his reading (read for what?) and the other is the selection of books (what to read so as to realize the revolutionary goal?).
