In magnetic fusion research, two sorts of axi-symmetric toroidal equilibrium configuration are mostly interested. One is the conventional tokamak that has an aspect ratio 2. 8<A = R/α<5, the other is the spherical torus (the ST configuration) with A≤1.4.For tokamaks, it is generally observed that equilibrium configurations with large triangular deformation usually has the merit of stabilizing higher beta plasma and better confinement scaling so that higher βN/li value can be attained. This was also verified theoretically in the ballooning mode analysis.
