Missionaries play a very important role in the cultural exchanges between the West and theEast.The paper analyzes the historical background of the English teaching in China in the period of thepost-Opium War;furthermore the paper,based on an examination of the English teaching in Tongwenguang(the Imperial College of Translators)and mission schools,makes an assessment of the missionaries'contribution to English Teaching of China.
