Sino Japanese Fostering Relations Regulations is the first treaty signed between these two counties in modern history. During the process of negociating and signing the treaty, Li Hongzhang and his colleagues drew a lesson from their experience with European nations and showed a new spritual outlook, opposing Japanese governments unfavorable requirements and actively safeguarding Chinas interests. However, owing to the profound influence of Confucianism on Li Hongzhang and his colleagues, the treaty signed in 1871 still failed to change the diplomatic situation in the late Qing Dynasty.
