This paper is an attempt to examine Bloomfield and Sapir抯 ideas of transitivity from a systemic functional perspective. Halliday抯 idea of transitivity generally concerns participants and processes in a clause where the identical form class may construe different meanings when the participants and the processes are not the same. Bloomfield and Sapir made various explorations on the interaction of meaning and form, but they interpreted meaning and clause from different perspectives. This paper intends to reconsider traditional conceptions, such as 揳gent? 損rocess? 搃deational category? 搈eaning?in terms of transitivity system framework.
