As both a painter and a painting theorist, Su Shi vividly interpreted the theory of Chinese painting from a distinctive perspective. Su’s personality was influenced by Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism, which was best showed in his bold and straightforward character. The full exposure of his character in return deeply influenced his painting and painting theory. Thus, he projected “lifelikeness” and “implication” in his paintings and developed the view of equal importance of form and effect.
