山西票号在广东

Shanxi Piaohao in Guangdong

晚清时期,山西票号在广东所设分号共有15家,大多在广州和汕头两口岸。山西票号在广东的主要活动包括汇兑和存放款,其汇兑活动除帮助清政府上解各种饷项以解决财政危机外,更主要的是国内南北商业贸易汇兑和对外贸易汇兑,体现了晚清中国金融业从内陆向沿海延伸,从国内商业资本的汇兑走向对外贸易的投资这一新趋势;其存放款活动主要是针对广东地方政府和官员,可见山西票号与广东地方政府之间相互支持、相互依赖关系之密切。此外,山西票号在广东还从事商业贸易和发行银两票的活动,促进了当时广东商品经济的繁荣发展。

Until late Qing Dynasty, Shanxi piaohao had set up 15 business houses in Guangdong. Most of them were in Guangzhou and Shantou, the two trade ports of that time. The main commercial activities of piaohao in Guangdong included transfer, deposit and loan. The transfer movement mainly included south-north trade transfer inside the country and foreign trade transfer, in addition to carrying all kinds of taxes for the government to deal with the finance crisis. It indicated a new trend of the China finance in late Qing Dynasty, the trade area extended from home to abroad and the investment in foreign trade was replacing the transfer of national business capital little by little. Due to the deposit and loan operation being aimed at the local government and the officials, the relation between Shanxi piaohao and local government was very close. Morever, Shanxi piaohao had some other roles, such as business trade, issuing tael paper and so on, these movements promoted the development of local economy in that time.
