本论文主要研究詹姆斯的小说理论专题论文和“纽约版小说序言”。专题论文《小说的艺术》是关于现实主义小说艺术的宣言。另外几篇专题论文知名度不太高,却作出了相当明确的理论表达。“纽约版小说序言”联系詹姆斯本人的小说来谈创作,可信度很高,堪称宝贵的理论资源。论文也指出,作为经典小说理论的代表,詹姆斯的理论也还显得不完善。他的许多见解,还包含在若干序言、散文里。

This paper focuses on a theoretical study of James's theoretical papers on fiction and the “Preface to the New York Edition”. His essay, The Art of the Novel, is a manifesto of realism in the art of novels. Several other essays on the novel are obscure in sense, but have explicit theoretical elaborations. “Prefaces to the New York Edition” discusses on the fictional writing in the context of James’s own novels, so they are highly reliable and are regarded as invaluable theoretical resources. The paper also points out that representing the classical theory on novel, James’s interpretation seems inadequate. Many of his views can be found in a number of other prefaces and essays.
