The word 'tea' derives from early Chinese dialects -such as Tchai, Cha and Tay - which are used to describe both the beverage and the leaf. According to Chinese mythology, in 2737 BC Chinese Emperor Shen Nung first discovered wild tea, and from then on, tea has been extensively planted. In the following centuries, tea was introduced to many other countries, such as Japan, India, Portugal, Great Briton, etc. Statistics show that China now has a huge tea farm of more than 1.2 million hectares and the total value is about RMB 30 billion per year. However, experts point out that the current development of Chinese tea industry falls far behind the world's average level. For example, with nearly half of the world's total tea gardens, China produces only about 20% of the world's tea output. In 2005, China's average output value of tea per person is 200 yuan, which is especially low compared to that of other tea-producing countries. In addition, Chinese tea markets, scattered all over the country, are mostly small-scale and have distinctive regional characteristics. Observers attribute these disappointed results to low level of technology, heavy tax, absence of famous brands, barriers of EURO import standard and other factors.
