This article describes a method to design the radio network controller (RNC) in the 3rd generation mobile system. Basing on the establishment of system architecture and traffic model which is applied to the architecture, the pre-condition of each board will be deduced. Then from the benchmark result of chips and components,the board level software and hardware architecture will be determined from the right choice of chips and components. Hopefully a high performance, high quality and high efficiency product will be benefi-(ted) from this method.
