尽管美国城市化程度高,但仍有相当大比例的人口分布于乡镇地区,以克莱瑞大学所在的宾夕法尼亚州为例,它的乡镇人口是美国最多的,有大约300万人口居住在被美国国家人口统计局定义的乡镇地区,依次则为北卡罗莱纳和纽约州。自70年代起,美国图书馆学界的一些学者开始重视对乡镇图书馆现状的调查研究。

The Village and Town Libraries Research Centre ot the School of Library Science,(?)University is a major research institute of American village and town libraries.It's aim is to add theknowledge about the characteristics and functions of village and town libraries into library sience.It's research topics involves the approach to basic concepts,the investigation on basic state,and thepeculiarities and effects of the service of village and town libraries.It also trains librarians forvillage and town libraries and holds academic conferences.It compiles and publishes a quarterlypublication of'Village and Town Libraries'.
