Dimmesdale is the most well-developed character in THE SCARLET LETTER by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Literary critics criticized him violently, ignoring the complexity of his inner world. Dimmesdale struggles between the reality of his inner world and the hypocrisy of the real world. There is so much human nature and so much divine nature in him. His hiding sin makes him better accomplish an angle's duty. Eventually the degraded angel returned to his heavenly home by public repentance.
