As a pornographic novel, Xixiangji, a novel written in ancient China, was attacked, banned and destroyed in the ancient times in China, especially in the Qing Dynasty. Preventing the book from being published and destroying the book was carried out by the government and supported by the public opinion. The purpose of doing so was to stop adapting the book into a play and meanwhile stop people from reading it. All this shows the attitude of the ruling class towards this book and the opinion of the officials and scholars of that times. Thus the normal criticism of this novel was affected. This had great influence on the spreading of the book.
