Han-shan, or Kangzan in Japanese,as one of the key religious figures that Japanese painters have chosen to depict since the Kamakura period (1185-1333 C.E.), has been the focus of many significant works of art by either ancient Zen Buddhists or modern scholars. In tracing the origin of the paintings related to Han-shan, attention should be paid to the impact of Han-shan poems outside China and to the spread of the Han-shan legends, his inseparable companion Shih-te, and the exemplary significance of their paintings in the Song and Yuan Dynasties.
