The Philosophy of Borrowing and China's Actual Conditions: A Third Discussion of the Dispute over "Problems vs. Isms"

"问题与主义"之争触及到的一个时代关注的焦点,就是外来主义与中国国情这一问题。其中既有读书人在学理方面的探讨,也有革命党人实践中的困扰和因应。争论各方都承认中西社会的歧异,并从世界角度思考中国问题的解决,而胡适关于输入外来"主义"应该考虑适合中国国情的观念在中共党人探索世界革命与中国革命的客观实际问题时也得到一定程度的呼应。

The dispute over ' problems vs. isms' reveals to us a pragmatic issue; the philosophy of borrowing vs. China's actual conditions, which indeed involves revolutionaries'puzzles and solutions as well as scholars'philosophical inquiries. The disputing parties both agree with the social differences between China and the West, and with solutions of China's problems in a global context. Hu Shih's proposition that the borrowed ' isms' must go suitable with Chinas actual conditions happened to coincide, to certain extent, with Chinese communists'quest for the integration of world revolution with the local revolution in China.
