This paper analyzes the two historical novels Zeng Guofan and Zhang Zhidong from a perspective of personality. The former is a better seller than the latter mainly because it satisfies the tastes of the mass audience, that’s to say, it embodies the aesthetic charm— — humanity of historical novels, and shows its readers social humanist views which are different from reality, and arouses the thirst for a resonance of some spirit and feeling from historical figures among its readers. This is also a unique characteristic of Tang Haoming’s historical novels in the embodiment of humanity.
