Side by Side with Taoism ──Xuheng and his Psychology

许衡是宋元之际一名重要的程朱理学家，活跃在蒙元入主中原时期。出仕前，他以承继儒学道统者自居；出仕后，则以推行儒学汉化为己任。概其一生，初时隐居家乡，研修儒学；继则学以致用，缘道出心；终则势不可为，退归故里。推行汉法时曾起了重大的作用是他的幸运，而终遭猜忌排挤则是他的悲剧。元朝之历时较短，与汉化不彻底有相当关系。

Xuheng, a prominent ChengZhu neo - Confucianist between the Song and Yuan Dynasty, displayed his full potentials when Mengyuan came to reign over the Central Plains. He earlier labeled himself as a Confucianist- Taoist disciple. After he assumed an officialpost, he chose to shoulder the responsibility of popularizing Taoism through Chinese. In other words, Xuheng, in his early days, lived a hermit life in his homeland, researching Confucianism. Then he applied the learnt ideas to practice. In the end, he felt unpopular and retired to his homeland. It is lucky for him to have been able to assist in spreading Taoism. Yet he was unfortunate enough that some people were suspicious and jealous of him and pushed aside him at long last, which could be attributed to the incomplete reformation of Taoism.
