摘要
The Study of t3anshan and Machang Painted Pottery deals with the painted pottery of the Banshan and Machang types, the richest groups of artifacts in prehistoric China. It makes an elaborate comparison and examination of about 4,000 vessels and their designs, and gains new knowledge of the evolutionary laws of their form and decoration. To analyse the composition of the designs, the author applies a multidirectional comprehensive approach different from previous methods, which allows a better understanding of the rich visual language and ideological connotations of the decorative patterns. In addition, the book offers completely new explanation to account for the sudden change in the style of painted pottery in the Banshan period, which undoubtedly widens our train of thought and field of view for inquiring into the sources of some cultural elements in the prehistoric Gansu-Qinghai region.
