Chinese American women novelists play a prominent role in Chinese American literature. Sui Sin Far is considered the first Chinese American writer in English. Jade Snow Wong is regarded as mother of Chinese American literature. Maxine Hong Kingston is the most acclaimed Chinese American writer, and Amy Tan the most popular. With awakened self-consciousness and ethnic consciousness, these authoresses rebel against the patriarchal dominance and protest against racial discrimination. Together with their male counterparts, Chinese American women writers have created a new breed of American literature--Chinese American literature.
