试论语境及其制约下的译文选择

On the restrictive functions of context on translation

语言的表达形式和确切含义无时无刻不受其所处语境的制约。在英汉翻译时 ,原文词、句与它对应的译文处于中西不同的语境中 ,因此 ,当我们进行译文选择时 ,就必须对语境的影响和制约作用有充分的认识 ,并运用一定的技巧 ,从而使译文从内容到形式都符合中西不同的语言习惯及文化背景。

The way of expression and the exact meaning of language are always influenced by the context in which it occurs. In translation from English to Chinese, the source language and the target language are under the different contexts of the West and the East. Therefore, when we try to find the proper translation for the original language, we should first take into consideration the influence and restrictive effect context produces on language so that the translation would accord with the demands of the context it belongs to and be in keeping with the cultural background ?customs and habits of the target language. This paper intends to show how translation is influenced and restricted by its context and what we can do to solve the problem.
