定语是与中心语相对应的句法概念,在语义上却不一定与中心语相对应,与语义对应的是典型的定语,不对应的是非典型的定语。“他的老师当得好”和“开他的玩笑”中的“他”就是非典型定语的两种表现,前者是语用简化的结果,后者是语言结构在语用中类推的结果,不管它们在语义上有什么表现、语用上有什么特殊,其句法地位是不变的。

Attribute is a syntax concept which corresponds with the headword, but not necessarily corresponds with it in semantic meaning. Those which correspond in semantic meaning are typical attributes, while those which don't are non-typical ones. “He' in “Ta de laoshi dang de hao' “Kai ta de wanxiao'(“He is a good teacher' and “Play a joke on him') are two examples of non-typical attribute, the former being the result of simplified language usage, the latter analogized language structure in language usage. No matter what the non-typical attribute displays in semantic meaning and language usage, its syntax remains unchanged.
