This paper examines an urban neighborhood, where its residents had mobilized for a reconstruction project that followed a protest event. This paper investigates how this mobilization affected social relations and cultural meanings in urban life. The paper studies the Chinese term shequ , which was highlighted during the mobilization. Originally a translation of the English term community, shequ has developed into a concept that emphasizes locality, heterogeneity, and spatiality, revealing a very particular representation of place in the Taiwan Residents context. This paper contends urban community movements represent a search for identity and meaning among city residents living in a fast changing environment.
