This paper, based on H. C. Andersen’s three fairy tales, analyzes the juxtaposed images of dream and death, their presentations, internal relations and implications, holding that death images in his tales are not only reflected as discontinuity of life, but also the turning point to eternity, and that the dream before death triggers the process. Simultaneously, the imbalance between life and death gives his stories a delicate tension embedded in contradictions.
