We reviewed the consumption of oxygen by roots and microorganisms and the uptake pathway of oxygen by roots, and discussed the oxygenation principles and the practical methods used in modern hydroponic systems. The conclusions are: in order to improve the aeration in hydroponic systems, we should control the length of culture bed, minimize the consumption of oxygen by microorganisms, increase the fransfer rate of oxygen into the culture system, and utilize the bio-aeration characteristics of root system.
