This paper presents a brief history of how the Toronto region's public transport services and infrastructure have evolved during the more than 150 years. The story is a complex one, involying a series of unrealized plans, a few visionary triumphs, and several wrong moves. A broad array of public transport modes is considered, ranging from early, unheated coaches, through horsecars, electric streetcars (trams) and buses,to air conditioned subway(metro)and commuter trains. The paper concludes with comments on the pernicious effects of the long term lack of adequate financial support from national and provincial governments. However, an optimistic note is sounded at the end, based upon early evidence of attitudinal change and inter-agency cooperation.
